Patios

A Patio That Matches Your Drive

Many of our patio customers have just had a new drive laid and want the back garden to match. Others are swapping old concrete slabs that have cracked, rocked and turned green for something that stays put. Whatever the starting point, a patio has to do three things: stay level, drain away from the house, and suit the way you use the garden.

We build block paving patios the same way we build drives, just with a lighter base for foot traffic. We dig out, lay and compact sub-base, set edge restraints and screed a sand bed to the right falls. Then the blocks go down in the pattern you've chosen. The finished patio sits below your damp-proof course and slopes gently away from the walls, so water never collects against the house.

What's included

What's Included in a Patio

Levels and falls away from the house

The patio is set at least two courses of brick below the damp-proof course and falls gently away from the walls.

Borders and soldier courses

A contrasting edge course frames the patio and gives it a finished, deliberate look.

Steps and thresholds

We can add block or slab steps down to the lawn, and a neat threshold at the back door or patio doors.

Matching or contrasting the drive

We can use the same block as your drive for a unified look, or a different colour to give the garden its own character.

Prices

Ideas

Block Paving Patio Ideas

  • A contrasting border. Charcoal edging around a brindle or buff patio is simple and smart.
  • A circle feature. It suits a table or fire pit in the middle of a larger patio.
  • Mixed block sizes. Two or three sizes laid randomly give a softer, more natural look than a single block.
  • Block and slab together. Large slabs in the middle, framed by block paving, make a modern mix.
  • A path link. Carry the same block down the garden as a path, so patio and path read as one design.

We'll sketch out options at the site visit and bring samples so you can see the colours in your own garden light.

FAQs

Block Paving Patio FAQs

Is block paving a good choice for a patio?

Yes, especially if you want it to match your drive or you need a hard-wearing surface. Blocks are small, so they handle curves well, and any area that sinks can be lifted and relaid.

Will a block paving patio be slippery?

Concrete block has a textured surface and is generally less slippery than smooth slabs. In shady, damp gardens any surface can get algae, and a clean once or twice a year keeps it under control.

Can you lay a patio over my old slabs?

We don't recommend it. Laying over old slabs raises the level towards your damp-proof course and leaves the old problems underneath. We lift the slabs and build a proper base instead.
